A new French translation
"Le village dans la ville: Famille et parenté dans l'Est londonien" of
Michael Young and Peter Willmott's seminal work is now available from
the Presses Universitaires de France.
First published in 1957, this vivid and touching picture of
family life in the East End of the 1950s is one of the great pioneering
works of modern sociology.
Bumping into life-long friends in the high street; bribing the rent
collector to get recently vacated houses for relatives; children playing
in the roads throughout the warm summer evenings; and street parties
organised by people who have lived in the same place for fifty years are
just some of the scenes evoked by this groundbreaking study, which was
based on major research. Encapsulating the strength and intimacy of East
End family ties, this is a wonderful portrait of a fondly remembered
way of life.
